Sophie Cunningham didn’t suit up for the Indiana Fever’s season opener Saturday, but she still made waves before the first whistle blew. Despite being ruled out with an ankle injury, the veteran guard turned heads with a bold, see-through outfit that got plenty of fans and cameras talking at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
The 27-year-old Missouri native, known for her fire on the court and flair off it, made good on a recent promise. Before the game, she told The Spun she had some “spicy” pregame looks lined up for the season. She wasn’t bluffing, either.
Cunningham made her entrance with confidence, fully embracing the fame even if she couldn’t join her teammates against the Chicago Sky.

Cunningham arrived in Indiana this offseason through a complex four-team trade involving the Phoenix Mercury, Connecticut Sun, and Dallas Wings. While she didn’t debut on the hardwood, she wasted no time making an impression. The Fever’s official channels shared photos capturing her outfit moments before tipoff. The look was daring, fashion-forward, and as promised, spicy.

“I do plan ahead, so my outfits are going to be fun and spicy,” Cunningham told The Spun. “We have a lot of eyes on our game. I’ll continue to grow my brand with the platform I’ve been given.”
Her statement reflects a growing trend in women’s sports, where pregame fashion is becoming just as much a part of the conversation as points and assists. Cunningham, who averaged 8.4 points per game and shot nearly 38 percent from deep last season, seems poised to grow her presence on and off the court.
Though she couldn’t play Saturday, Cunningham clarified she’s all-in on her new team and city. “I thrive in a motion offense. I thrive in a run-and-gun offense,” she said. “As a shooter and slasher, that’s a dream. On the court, I’m super excited. Off the court, it’s a great opportunity for me to get back to my roots and give back to the community.”
With her hometown just a few hours away, Cunningham sees this move to Indiana as both a professional and personal win. While fans wait on her return, the Fever will look to Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and DeWanna Bonner to hold the line. But Cunningham? She’s already making a statement- no jersey required.
