Mom’s joke steals spotlight after a title-winning run.
Fernando Mendoza gave Indiana fans an unforgettable moment Monday night. He also scared his mom half to death.
Late in the national title game against Miami, Indiana was up by three and facing fourth and five. Coach Curt Cignetti kept the offense on the field. Mendoza took the snap and ran. He broke tackles, stayed on his feet, and jumped into the end zone. The touchdown sealed the win and made the crowd go crazy.
It also sent his mom, Elsa, into full parent mode.
After the game, she spoke with reporters on the field and laughed about the play. “I was like, ‘You’re a quarterback, not a running back, what are you doing?’” she said with a laugh. “But, you know, like he says, he’ll do whatever it takes to get his team the touchdown, and he did. I’ll have a couple words with him when he gets home. No running!”
Her comment went viral almost instantly. Fans loved it. Cameras also caught Mendoza’s younger brother Max reacting on the sideline, making the moment feel like something straight out of a family movie.

The touchdown came early in the fourth quarter with Indiana holding a narrow lead. The Hoosiers faced a big decision. They could kick a field goal. Instead, they went for it.
Mendoza took the snap as pressure closed in. He rolled out, spotted an opening, and took off. Two defenders grabbed him, but he broke free and dove into the end zone. The stadium erupted. His teammates rushed to celebrate. The score gave Indiana some breathing room and locked the play into school history.
Mendoza’s stats aren’t that crazy, but he played smart football. He threw for 186 yards, completed 16 passes, and avoided costly mistakes. Most importantly, he delivered when the situation demanded.
Earlier, Mendoza took a hard shot after handing off on a read-option to running back Kaelon Black. Defensive back Jakobe Thomas lowered his helmet into Mendoza’s chest and face. The hit appeared to cut Mendoza’s lower lip. No flag was thrown, which left many confused.
Indiana finished the job and won its first national championship with a 27-21 win. The Hoosiers ended the season a perfect 16-0, completing a rise that began two years ago under coach Curt Cignetti.
After the game, Mendoza spoke with ESPN’s Holly Rowe about the fourth-down run. He said he was willing to take hits from any angle for his team. “They would do the same for me,” he said.
Indiana now has a championship. Mendoza has a legendary highlight. And his mom walked away with the quote of the night.
