Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham trade social media jabs as Fever star remains sidelined
Ever since the Indiana Fever snagged her in a multi-team deal last offseason with the Phoenix Mercury, Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark have become close to inseparable off the basketball court.
The WNBA duo took another playful jab at each other this past Friday evening. Clark, who’s still recovering from a groin injury, shared on her Instagram story to her massive following of over 3.5 million a snapshot of Cunningham during warm-ups, initially posted by the Fever’s official account.
Cunningham’s blonde hair was pulled back in a bun that sat somewhat crooked atop her head. “@SophieCunningham, love this hairstyle,” Clark captioned the post. The 28-year-old seized the moment to fire back. “This is you on a good day so RELAX princess,” Cunningham responded on her own story moments later
Clark will sit out Indiana’s next matchup once more due to a persistent left quad injury. The 9-8 Fever, coming off their victory in the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup, will welcome the 5-13 Los Angeles Sparks to their home court.
Counting the Cup final (which doesn’t factor into Indiana’s official record), Clark has been sidelined for 10 games this season after staying injury-free during her previous campaign and throughout her collegiate career at the University of Iowa.
“We went through semi-live shooting drills,” Fever head coach Stephanie White explained following a recent team practice. “[She] still hasn’t gone full speed in a practice or a live defensive group. But she’s been getting some 3-on-3 work on her own.

“I think the biggest thing is she’s stated she’s not a fan of minutes restrictions. If there’s going to be a minutes restriction, maybe we’ll hold her another game.”
Cunningham and Clark had a significant break in May – the duo was frequently seen together, arriving and leaving in casual attire.
Since her comeback, Cunningham has comfortably assumed a supportive role off the bench, regularly clocking 20-25 minutes per game behind other Fever perimeter players like Natasha Howard, Lexi Hull, and Kelsey Mitchell.
Aari McDonald, initially brought on as an emergency signing, has been starting matches for Indiana. She logged 31 minutes in the team’s decisive 81-54 triumph over the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday, netting eight points and adding seven assists and seven rebounds to her tally.
In the Fever’s Commissioner’s Cup victory over the Minnesota Lynx, Cunningham, who scored 12 points, had a tough night with a 1-4 shooting record. However, Aliyah Boston and Howard stepped up, contributing 20 and 25 points respectively
