Chris Haynes recently reflected on Chris Paul’s confrontation with assistant coach Jeff Van Gundy, during which Van Gundy told Paul that he doesn’t have the “leeway” to make decisions, involving Kawhi Leonard.
The Los Angeles Clippers recently surprised the basketball community by parting ways with veteran point guard Chris Paul. This decision sparked intense discussions, especially since it followed a confrontation between Paul and assistant coach Jeff Van Gundy.
During the Clippers’ 114-110 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, Paul instructed Kawhi Leonard to defend Klay Thompson. Later, Van Gundy confronted Paul about this sideline message, indicating that Paul did not have the authority to make such a decision.
These developments sparked major discussions throughout the league. Recently, NBA Insider Chris Haynes shared his thoughts on the situation and discussed Paul’s ‘Leeway’ post on Instagram.
“That occurred from a game against the Dallas Mavericks. Sources told me that when he [Leonard] was guarding Klay Thompson, he was struggling when he got into the game … and so there was a timeout called. During that time out, Chris Paul went up to Kawhi Leonard and said ‘Hey man, are you fresh enough? You feel good? You feel like you can stick with Klay Thompson and ask his teammates, ‘hey, maybe you wanna switch this. I was told that Jeff Van Gundy told Chris Paul ‘Listen you might’ve had leeway in other places to change up defensive coverages, but you don’t have that leeway here,” Haynes said on NBA on Prime.
After his confrontation with Gundy, Paul called out the assistant coach. He posted the definition of “leeway” on his Instagram story after the loss to the Mavericks. Later, the Clippers decided to part ways with him.

Several players and analysts shared their opinions on the Clippers’ decision to part ways with Chris Paul. In a recent interview on NBA on Prime, former Clippers star Blake Griffin defended Paul in this ongoing drama.
“I’m just disappointed, to be honest. I can’t really think of another word. Obviously shocked at first, but disappointed. I’m disappointed for Chris Paul, but I’m disappointed in the Clippers organization….I talked to CP Wednesday, I talked to him yesterday, I talked to him today — no communication with [Clippers owner] Steve Ballmer. And that’s the disappointing thing for me.” Griffin said.
Griffin expressed disappointment in the Clippers regarding Paul’s situation. He specifically mentioned that neither the Clippers owner, Steve Ballmer, nor the head coach, Ty Lue, had communicated with the veteran point guard.
