Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer required surgery this week after hurting his throwing hand in last weekend’s win over Auburn.
Following his procedure on Wednesday, Mateer took to social media to update his recovery. He said the surgery went well and credited Dr. Steven Shin of Cedars-Sinai Orthopaedics in Los Angeles.
“Thank God for a successful procedure. Dr. Shin is the GOAT. BOOMER SOONER!!” Mateer tweeted out.
Brent Venables said in the release that Mateer is expected to return at some point this season.
“After consulting with medical experts, it became clear that surgery is the best option for John and his short- and long-term future,” Venables said to reporters.
“He’s extremely disappointed he will miss some game action, but is eager to correct the issue and move forward. As he is with everything, we know he will be aggressive with his rehabilitation and work to return to the field as quickly as possible.”
Following his surgery, local police in Norman made sure to shield John Mateer from the media as he made his way off a private jet. Nobody could get a shot of him.
Head college football coach Brent Venables thought it was “weird” that people would gather at the airport just to see him.
What Is Oklahoma Going To Do Without John Mateer?
Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer (10) throws a pass during a college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the Auburn Tigers at Gaylord Family Ð Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla., Saturday,Sept. 20, 2025. Oklahoma won 24-17.
John Mateer underwent surgery on his throwing hand after injuring it during Saturday’s win against Auburn.
According to a university news release, Brent Venables expects Mateer to return to action “sometime this season.”
In the meantime, Venables said sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. will start against Kent State on Oct. 4.
With Mateer, the Sooners are ranked No. 7 in the AP Top 25. He has been one of the most important players for OU this season.
After the Kent State game, Oklahoma has a mega matchup with the Texas Longhorns.
The matchup between two new quarterbacks in Texas’ Arch Manning and Oklahoma’s John Mateer has been the talk of the conference ever since the two were confirmed as the starting quarterbacks.
Now that dream is dead in the water with Mateer’s injury.
