Veteran point guard Chris Paul is officially set to return to the Los Angeles Clippers next season. Over the past few weeks, several teams, including the Milwaukee Bucks, Dallas Mavericks, and Charlotte Hornets, expressed interest in adding Paul to their rosters. But ultimately, the 12-time All-Star opted to reunite with the team he once called home.

Appearing on ESPN, NBA insider Shams Charania provided deeper insight into Paul’s decision to return to Los Angeles.

“Chris Paul wanted to stay near his family in Los Angeles this upcoming season. And the Clippers needed another reserve guard. They needed someone at the point guard position coming off the bench. So it made it a perfect match, a perfect reunion,’ Shams said.

Charania also revealed Paul’s mindset heading into the season. The ESPN reporter suggested this could be the final chapter of Paul’s decorated NBA career.

“I’m told Chris Paul is expected to retire after this season. He’s going to go through training camp, go through the season like he always does, see how it goes. But his plan is for this to be his final season. He got to do just that for a potential storybook finish to a 21-year illustrious Hall of Fame career,” Shams added.

 

Chris Paul Accepts Smaller Role On Stacked Roster

Paul had previously shown interest in joining a team where he could start. Yet, his return to the Clippers comes with the understanding that his role will be limited, according to Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints.

“Chris Paul is returning to the franchise he helped get off the ground with the understanding that an established and deep roster means he may not be playing much every single night,” Azarly reported.

Paul will likely take on a supporting role behind Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, and the team’s core players. Still, the opportunity to finish his career in familiar surroundings and on a competitive roster was enough to convince him.

The 40-year-old guard originally began his NBA journey in New Orleans before being traded to the Clippers, where he spent six impactful seasons. Now, with the move, he has gotten a chance to hang his cleats with the Clippers.

The Atlanta Dream center found herself at the center of social media controversy last month when some fans thought she disparaged Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark upon fouling out.

The game’s broadcast focused on an upset Griner saying something as she returned to the Dream bench after fouling out of the game. While there’s no audio of this moment, some who tried to read Griner’s lips thought she called Clark a “trash f–king white girl.”

However, there’s no proof of Griner saying those actual words since others thought she stated something else.

It took weeks for someone to finally get a quote from her, and she provided much of nothing.

Brittney Griner was asked about this moment before her team’s June 15 game against the Washington Mystics and said, “I remember fouling out, being mad. I remember fouling out on, I believe it was [Natasha] Howard driving to the basket. They said I put my hand in.”

Moments before the conclusion of the Indiana Fever’s 81-76 victory over the Dream at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta weeks ago, cameras seemingly caught Atlanta Dream star center Brittney Griner labeling Caitlin Clark “trash” before calling her a “f***ing white girl” in frustration over a foul on Natasha Howard.

The clip of Griner speaking on the bench, lacking context, spread on social media and went viral.

Griner, who won a gold medal for Team USA at the Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024, essentially got away with whatever came out of her mouth because the league basically ignored the controversy.

This incident is not the only time Griner vocalized her frustrations this season. Following another game, she stormed off mid-interview, yelling at the referees to “be f—ing better.
