You know things are getting weird when Dave Portnoy is slamming Elon Musk and buying $10 million in Tesla stock all at once.

On Monday, during his “Davey Day Trader” stream, the Barstool Sports founder didn’t hold back while reacting to Musk’s announcement of launching a political movement called The American Party. While Musk’s move created curiosity and some support, most notably from billionaire Mark Cuban, Portnoy wasn’t having it.

“I don’t trust Elon Musk,” Portnoy said bluntly. “Brilliant, crazy, eccentric mad man. That’s how I would describe Elon Musk.” He then asked the question a lot of people might be thinking: “Mark Cuban’s joining the American Party? What?… You don’t know what [Musk’s] gonna do second to second.”

Portnoy’s comments came after Musk revealed plans to spearhead a third political party in the U.S., one that he claims isn’t about the left or right, but about “common sense.” Cuban, who once owned the Dallas Mavericks, backed Musk’s idea on Bluesky, suggesting it was time for something outside the traditional political mess.

Portnoy, however, didn’t bite. While he’s been critical of Trump in the past and isn’t exactly waving party flags, he made it clear he doesn’t want Musk anywhere near full political control. “He’s probably the last guy I’d trust with total power,” Portnoy said. “Again, brilliant—no doubt about that—but I don’t get this American Party.”

Despite all the skepticism, Portnoy is still Portnoy. That same day, while roasting Musk’s political ambitions, he considered dropping a cool $10 million into Tesla stock. “It’s down seven-and-a-half percent,” he told a viewer. “I’m debating, do I put $10 million into Tesla right now, hope to make 10 percent.”

By Tuesday, Tesla stock had already bounced back. So, business-wise, Portnoy might’ve made a smart move. Politically though? He’s not signing up for Musk’s revolution anytime soon.

In the end, Portnoy is clear on his part. Elon might be a genius with rockets and EVs, but leading a country? That’s a different game. And not one he’s ready to trust Musk with just yet.
