His team was in the midst of a perfect 12-0 season when he disappeared. They were set to play in Virginia’s Region 2D championship game. Union High School’s football team won the 2025 Region 2D Championship without him.

Travis Turner is wanted on five counts of ch*ld p0rnography possession. He is also facing ch*ld solicitation charges. Police were likely watching him for a long time before he disappeared.

Experts told The Daily Mail that cases like Turner usually start online. Many believe that the 46-year-old may have been caught through a secret police sting. If not, he was likely flagged by tech systems that track illegal images.

Criminologist Dr. Alex del Carmen spoke to the Daily Mail this week. He stated he wouldn’t be surprised if Turner was caught in an undercover operation.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Turner took the bait of an undercover officer posing as a ch*ld,” Dr. del Carmen said. “It’s one of the easiest ways we catch bad guys that are doing this kind of thing.”

Carmen said police enter chat rooms. They also enter social platforms for the sole purpose of catching adults talking to minors. Veteran detective Brian Kohlhepp agreed with that assessment.

“It’s a common thing law enforcement does to go into chat rooms in an undercover capacity,” Kohlhepp said. “They try to catch individuals who are having s3xual conversations with who they believe to be minors.”

Another way that Travis Turner was caught also emerged. Platforms like Facebook, Meta, and Instagram use automated systems. They flag ch*ld s3xual abuse material. Once they find it, they report it to the police.

Sociologist David Finkelhor explained this to the Daily Mail. “Somebody who is downloading ch*ld p0rn and working with ch*ldren is at greater risk to abuse real ch*ldren.”

“It could be that a tech company identified an image and reported it to the police.”

The search for Turner has now entered its third week. There has been no public breakthrough announced.
