Dr. Jesse Morse analyzed video of Patrick Mahomes’ left knee hyperextension.
Patrick Mahomes may not play another game in 2025.
The Kansas City Chiefs saw their season end with a 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. What is even more brutal is the injury to their star quarterback.
With Mahomes driving late in the fourth quarter, he injured his knee and stayed down on the ground. It forced Gardner Minshew into the game with Patrick out. He was later seen hobbling with two trainers as he headed to the locker room. It didn’t look good for the three-time Super Bowl champ. Many were waiting to see the extent of the injury.
Sports medicine physician Dr. Jesse Morse gave his take on Patrick Mahomes’ injury. The NFL injury expert described it as a “left knee sprain” involving hyperextension, which could potentially stress multiple ligaments. “Hyperextended – often PCL is stressed,” Morse wrote.
Morse added there was “a little medial stress (MCL) at the end.”
“With the Chiefs out of the playoffs, I wonder if Mahomes gets shut down for the rest of the year.”
Patrick Mahomes finished the game 16-of-28 with 189 passing yards and an interception. He scored a rushing touchdown in the first quarter.
Minshew threw an interception on the final drive, and the Chargers celebrated a 16-13 win.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a left knee injury on Sunday. It happened late in the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Chargers. He was rolling to his right when a defender hit him. It appeared Mahomes hyperextended his knee as he went down to the ground.
Speaking post-game, head coach Andy Reid offered something on his injured quarterback.
“Patrick hurt his left knee; he’ll get an MRI tomorrow or this evening,” Reid said.
Kansas City needed a win to stay in the playoff hunt. Unfortunately, everything went wrong for them. With the loss coupled with victories by the Texans and Jaguars, the Chiefs were knocked out of playoff contention.
The Chiefs had made it to the AFC Championship each year since 2018. They had also won the AFC West division for nine straight years.
