Stephanie White Responds to Critics During Press Conference After DiJonai Carrington Remarks [VIDEO]

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White faced intense backlash this week. Fans and media voices called for her dismissal after she commented on a hard foul. DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky delivered the contact against Sophie Cunningham.
Carrington received a flagrant 2 and an ejection during Saturday’s win. White spoke right after the game. She said she did not believe Carrington aimed for the neck on purpose. She also praised the Sky guard’s competitive style.
Those words sparked anger online. Some claimed White failed to defend her own player. Dave Portnoy and others demanded her removal. Indiana’s lieutenant governor even joined the criticism.

White met with reporters Tuesday before the New York Liberty game. She delivered a prepared statement without taking questions. She made clear the comments targeted an online community.
“You know, this isn’t necessarily for those people that are in this room,” she said. “This is more for an online community that’s trying to create narratives that simply don’t exist. Trying to create a fabrication or distortion of who I am, of what I’m about. Our players’ success, our players’ health and wellness, our players’ safety is always a top priority for me. One of the things I pride myself on is my relationships with players.”
“For those who have anything to say about the play in the last game, I didn’t see the play in real time. I went straight to a press conference. I thought the play got called right. Thankfully, Sophie’s okay. Was it egregious? Absolutely. When you have a chance to watch that over and over and over on replay, you can see that I didn’t have that in real time. I take personally any suggestions that I don’t 100% always have my players back.
“I ride with them 10 toes down all the time. All the time. They know that. It’s a shame that we can’t have an opportunity to talk about what great basketball they’re playing. Because they are f-cking playing.”
The Fever then beat the Liberty 106-92. Players later backed their coach. Caitlin Clark said the team would ride for her. Cunningham also expressed support and noted the locker room stays tight.

Fever president Kelly Krauskopf issued a strong statement of her own. She praised White’s leadership and said the coach has full support from the organization. Krauskopf highlighted the team’s strong position for a playoff push.
The controversy grew from one postgame comment. White previously coached Carrington in Connecticut. That history fueled some of the criticism. Yet the Fever remain focused on basketball.
White has guided the team through heavy scrutiny this season. The group sits in solid playoff position. Recent wins show the squad stays united despite the noise.
