Sophie Cunningham Draws Criticism After Comments About Rap Music

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham faces new criticism after fans questioned a recent post about her pregame music.
Before Sunday’s game against the Chicago Sky, Cunningham shared a video of herself dancing to country music. She captioned the post, “What rap songs do you listen to before games?” and surprisingly, fans took the question as a shot at rap music.
Cunningham hasn’t directly addressed the recent criticism, but the controversy around her comments on transgender women in women’s sports, and a recent on-court fight, have kept the eyes on her.
For her part, she is doing her best to be out of the chaos and focus purely on basketball. Even so, unwanted issues continue to follow her.
Fans Point To Cunningham’s Past Comments
Many fans were quite frustrated with her recent TikTok video and shared their views on it.
One fan called it, “Micro-aggression. No one ever asked her this. We know why she’s targeting rap music specifically. Grift on Sophie.”
Another wrote, “Oh look at me i’m not like other basketball players i don’t listen to THAT type of music, Sophie Cunningham I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE.”
Before the 2026 WNBA season, Cunningham spoke about her gameday routine. She said her music choices can change from day to day.
She also named several rap artists among her favorites.
“This is where I go downhill quite fast, because I am someone who has a routine, but not much,” Cunningham said. “I just do what I feel that day, and so it could be anything from country. Morgan Wallen, Kodi Johnson, Riley Green, all the way to Lil Wayne, Drake, future like it’s anything in between. So I’m kind of a squirrel brain so I don’t know.”
The old interview resurfaced on X after her latest post, and some fans then questioned whether Cunningham had changed her stance on rap music.
“This is funny because she’s previously mentioned she likes rap but now that she’s a MAGA princess she’s changed her tune,” one fan wrote.
Another person took an even harsher view, writing, “So pathetic. She knows her wnba ‘career’ is likely over after this season.”
For now, the controversy continues to follow the Fever guard as fans debate what she meant by her post.
