DiJonai Carrington didn’t just make noise for her performance Thursday night, she made them for what happened after the final whistle.

Following the Dallas Wings’ 97-92 loss to the Chicago Sky, all eyes shifted from the scoreboard to an intense exchange between Carrington and a WNBA referee that ended with an unexpected call for security.

Carrington, who dropped 15 points in the game, found herself at the center of controversy during a postgame conversation with official Roy Gulbeyan. As the two exchanged words courtside, tensions flared. Within seconds, Gulbeyan motioned for security, reportedly uncomfortable with the tone of Carrington’s remarks.

A nearby guard stepped in to separate the two, drawing reactions from across the WNBA community.

Carrington didn’t hold back her feelings about the incident. On Friday night, she posted her response on X (formerly Twitter), calling out the referee’s decision.

“Security…, when I’m literally having a civil conversation is insane,” she wrote. “Mind you, he called the ‘sEcUrItY’ over there.”

The moment quickly became a lightning rod for debate. Many fans felt Gulbeyan overstepped by calling for backup during what they saw as a heated but non-threatening interaction.

“Security intervening was a bit extra,” one fan wrote.

Another chimed in, “He soft. How you calling security because you can’t do your job.”

One user voiced a broader concern, saying, “WNBA refs are so afraid of confrontation. Everyone gets a tech, coaches can’t argue calls. It’s getting ridiculous.”

This isn’t just about one moment between a player and a referee. It reflects growing frustration among fans and players over how officials handle conflict on the court. With Carrington’s return to action set for Saturday evening in another matchup against the Sky, all eyes will be on how referees manage the game, and how Carrington responds.

The Dallas guard, who was traded to the Wings in the offseason, has already impacted the court. But now, with the spotlight shifting to her off-court interactions, Carrington finds herself at the heart of a bigger conversation about player expression and officiating standards in the WNBA.
